We went camping Saturday. This was a first for us as a family and something I have been wanting to do for a while. We went with a few other families, one of whom has permission to use the private land we were on.
We have been out to this spot a couple of times. In the summer the girls went swimming in the lake, which they missed doing this time. Yeah – no swimming, considering it was f-r-e-e-z-i-n-g. Typical fall weather for this area – warm during the day, maybe on the brisk side, but still doesn’t require a coat in the afternoons. But the evenings are very cold, getting close to actual freezing temperatures. All that is to say: I didn’t sleep well. I shared a sleeping bag with Chip, but the zipper on these crappy bags we bought the last time we went camping (about 12 years ago) don’t stay zipped, so I spent the whole night trying to rezip the bag without waking him up. I spent the other half of the night nursing him because he woke, it felt like, every 20 minutes since, I’m guessing, he was cold. Or, just not in his regular bed. Or, whatever. So yeah, I was miserable. I also felt sorry for the young couple in the tent next to us who made the dire mistake of pitching their tent too close the family with the crying “baby”.
During the day and evening, though, we had a blast. There was a rope swing hanging from a branch about 50 feet up in the air. The kids would have spent the entire 24 hours we were there swinging if there had been an adult wishing to push them that long. They looked like they were flying as they swung on it. There were frogs to catch at the lake and a very friendly cat that lived at the caretaker’s cabin who Bird and Mare adopted as their own. Someone brought their four-wheeler, so each kid got to take a quick ride. The caretaker’s laboradore loved to play soccer, and Bird had fun with him. Lots of running around and exploring.
If I could find my camera’s cable, I would post some pictures.
